East Hampton Historical Society presents 'Thomas Moran Discovers the American West'
Prang chromolithograph printed in Boston from an original watercolor by Thomas Moran. These were the first multi-color commercial prints that spread the colors that were lacking in the black & white wood engravings. This print was done in 1871 and is in the collection of the National Park Service at Yellowstone.

EAST HAMPTON VILLAGE, NY.- The East Hampton Historical Society, stewards of the Thomas & Mary Nimmo Moran Studio, encourage the public to experience “Thomas Moran Discovers the American West”, an illustrated journey of the 1871 exhibition by Moran to Wyoming. Moran’s adventures inspired both the art world and the National Parks Service.

“Treasures from Yellowstone”
Curated by Richard Barons, the East Hampton Historical Society’s Chief Curator, this artful and historically curated exhibition, took over two years to assemble. Over 70 items – many on temporary loan – details Moran’s adventurous participation in the 1871 Hayden Expedition to Wyoming, told through oil paintings, watercolors, period maps, stereographic cards, wood engravings, photographs, late 19th century publications and Moran’s personal items. During these final few weeks, Mr. Barons will be on-site to personally take you on this illustrated journey, a journey that helped to inspire the National Parks Service and galvanized a group of artists to promote America’s pride in its landscapes and natural wonders.

The substantial portion of this exhibit is material that is returning to Mr. Moran’s Studio after being gifted to Yellowstone National Park in the 1940s. In addition, the exhibition was made possible by the generous loan of paintings and artifacts from highly respected institutions and museums, including the US Department of the Interior, National Parks Service, Museum of Yellowstone, Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall, Brigham Young University Library, private collectors and renowned libraries and galleries – all on temporary loan.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime look into the adventure that launched Moran on a trajectory to become one of the leaders of both the National Parks movement and the art world…but time is running out! Experience these major works of art, all under the roof of the recently renovated Thomas and Mary Nimmo Moran Studio (circa 1884), Main Street, East Hampton. Run – don’t walk – to “Thomas Moran Discovers the American West” by Sunday, November 10, before it’s going, going, gone! Admission is free. All are welcome.
