The Presence of the Line: A Selection of New Acquisitions from the 20th and 21st Centuries

MUNICH.- Drawings and prints by 120 artists spanning all generations and from the most varied of backgrounds come face to face in this exhibition that can be seen as an ‘encore’ to the jubilee show, held at the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung on the occasion of its 250th anniversary last year. These selected works, which were not included in the jubilee show for conceptual reasons, provide a tantalising insight into the most recent history of new acquisitions.

The line – in all its forms of expression – has been the dominant medium since the early days of drawing. This juxtaposition of works does not aim at any strict classification into art-historical categories. Instead, like a florilegium of individual sheets by well and lesser known artists, unexpected correlations can be discovered. Drawings by such legendary 20th-century artists as Matisse, Laurens and Masson, and works by equally famous protagonists such as Kelly, LeWitt, Darboven, Beuys, Chillida and Artschwager are shown next to those of the younger and youngest generations, including Ellenrieder, Heath, Ortwed, Shishkin, Stegmaier and Terfloth. A playfully open dialogue emerges that calls on the viewer’s creative phantasy and emphasizes the importance of the line in drawing for younger generations of artists, too.
