Optical Installation by Morgane Tschiember Unveiled at Design Center
Stars and Stripes reflects Tschiember’s ongoing exploration of form, color and materials.
DANIA BEACH, FL.- Stars and Stripes, a three story, site specific installation by French artist Morgane Tschiember, was unveiled on July 15, 2010 in the newly renovated Atrium A of the DCOTA (Design Center of the Americas) in Dania Beach. The unveiling coincided with the launch of the DCOTA’s International Design Series July 15-August 14.

Stars and Stripes, commissioned by Charles S. Cohen of Cohen Design Centers, owners of the DCOTA, and curated by Helen Varola, Cohen Design Center curator, reflects Tschiember’s ongoing exploration of form, color and materials. The sculpture is an example of her innovative approach to painting and making sculpture, revealing her particular interest in how meaning “shifts” through multi-dimensions, including time, action, movement, flux and fluidity.

At first glance, Stars and Stripes appears to be cascading colored lines floating in space. However, upon closer examination, one notices a recurrent star motif that forms ten planar surfaces on each of the 42 sticks, which are each 13 feet high. The sticks are painted with shiny high-gloss colors so that the scattered stripes and stars overlap. The stars, which seem stretched by gravitational forces, invade the Atrium space falling like a geometrical and random “mobile.”

“Tschiember’s pick up stick composition is an exultant tour de force design automation that routes relational meaning and perception through glossy, radiant color and sensuous shifting physicality recalling Craig Kauffman and John McCracken,” says Helen Varola.

Born in 1976 in Brest, France, Morgane Tschiember lives and works in Paris. She graduated from ESNAB (National School of Fine Arts) in Paris in 2002. She won the Paul Ricard Prize in 2001and has participated in over 60, international, solo and group exhibitions.
