NEW YORK, NY.- PULSE Contemporary Art Fair presents PULSE New York 2012, a leading art fair dedicated to international contemporary art, from May 3-6, 2012, at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. Currently in its seventh edition, PULSE New York will host sixty national and international galleries, presenting exhibitions that span across all media, from works on paper, painting, and sculpture, to performance, installation, and video art.

“PULSE provides a unique platform for exhibitors from around the world to present artists ranging from the well-established, to undiscovered and emerging talents. Interestingly, given the financial uncertainty in Europe, we are seeing an increase in European galleries who are looking to access US-based audiences” comments Cornell DeWitt, Director. “PULSE is consistently a favorite of exhibitors and visitors because we offer a diversity of galleries and artists within a dynamic atmosphere. While there are always fairs that people feel they have to visit, PULSE is a fair that they love to visit.”

This year’s exhibiting galleries include Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles, featuring a large series of modern paintings by Andrew Masullo, who has been celebrated as a standout of the recent 2012 Whitney Biennial; and Tyler Rollins Fine Art, New York, exhibiting a series of photographs by Tracey Moffatt, entitled, “Plantation” (2009) and “First Jobs” (2008), whose film works will be shown concurrently at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Meulensteen, New York, will showcase groundbreaking video by Siebren Versteeg, which depicts the results of algorithmically created paintings, generated every 24 hours; and Von Lintel Gallery, New York, will present a range of recent works from artists Melanie Willhide, Catherine Howe, and John Chiara.

PULSE’s consistently strong showing of international exhibitors include GALERIE STEFAN ROEPKE of Cologne, Germany, who will be featuring photographic landscapes by Sharon Harper and abstract paintings by Julie Oppermann; NIEVES FERNANDEZ of Madrid, Spain, offering works from artists such as Jordi Alcaraz, Danica Phelps, Arnulf Rainer, Jeff Cowen, Pipo Hernández Rivero and more; Purdy Hicks Gallery of London, UK, displaying contemporary photographs and drawings from Susan Derges, Bettina von Zwehl, Claire Kerr, and Ralph Fleck; Lawrie Shabibi of Dubai, UAE, presenting mixed-media pieces by local artists Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Sama Alshaibi, Driss Ouadahi, and Shahpour Pouyan; and Hilger modern/contemporary, Vienna, Austria, featuring Cameron Platter, Ángel Marcos, Brian McKee, and Oliver Dorfer.

PULSE New York 2012 will also welcome several exciting exhibitors to IMPULSE, a section of the fair devoted to emerging galleries who are presenting solo-artist offerings. IMPULSE exhibitors include New York galleries Black & White Gallery/Project Space, debuting three-dimensional works by Peter Brock, founder of Baji Lives!, an ongoing and collaborative public art project that brings color to the boroughs of New York; Halsey Mckay Gallery, featuring Chris Duncan’s sewn collages and works on paper that explore light and perception as physical metaphors; and international galleries, Antena Estudio of Mexico City, Mexico, showcasing Rocio Infestas; and Temnikova & Kasela Gallery of Tallinn, Estonia, displaying works by native painter, Sigrid Viir.

IMPULSE artists are eligible to receive the PULSE PRIZE, a monetary grant that is awarded to an emerging artist of distinction, selected by the PULSE Committee. The 2012 PULSE PRIZE winner will be announced on Saturday, May 5th. This year’s limited edition PULSE New York tote bags were designed by last year’s recipient, David Ellis.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
PULSE New York 2012 continues its signature series, PULSE PROJECTS, an engaging selection of installations throughout the fair, proposed by galleries and not-for-profit institutions. PULSE PROJECTS enables the exploration of artistic practice outside of the confines of a booth, and lends to larger solutions within the context of thefair. This year’s highlights include an architectural-inspired piece by Lead Pencil Studio courtesy of Lawrimore Project, and a performance by Shannon Gillen & Guests.

The latest edition of PULSE PLAY>, the fair’s ongoing video lounge series, will be curated by Babycastles, an independent, artist-created, video game arcade in New York City. Among the international roster of past PULSE PLAY> curators are Stanya Kahn, Dossier Journal, Lucie Fontaine, João Ribas, Marina Fokidis, Magda Gonzalez-Mora, Bill Arning and Christopher Eamon.
