FIGMENT Weekend: 6th annual participatory arts event on Governors Island June 9-10
Artist Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos to bring the Palm Authority Project to NYC Governors Island for Figment Festival on June 9-10th.
NEW YORK, NY.- FIGMENT, a free, family-friendly participatory arts event held in multiple cities and attracting tens of thousands of participants each year, has announced their sixth annual FIGMENT NYC Weekend. FIGMENT is an explosion of creative energy, a celebration of participatory art and culture where everything is possible. For one weekend every summer, FIGMENT transforms Governors Island into a large-scale collaborative artwork — and then it’s gone.

Founded in 2007 on New York City’s Governors Island with a handful of projects and a few thousand enthusiasts, FIGMENT has grown exponentially into a multi-day, multi-city event that drew over 30,000 participants in NYC, Boston, Jackson (MS) and Detroit in 2011. With the addition of Washington DC, Cedar Rapids and Pittsburgh in 2012, FIGMENT grows to seven cities and continues its mission to offer free, inclusive and participatory art and creative culture to entire communities, removing the barriers of museum and gallery walls and entrance fees, and blurring the lines between those who create and those who enjoy art.

The FIGMENT NYC 2012 event is June 9-10 from 10AM-6PM, our sixth annual weekend event, in which Governors Island will be filled with interactive and participatory artwork in every discipline. With over 200 registered projects in any conceivable medium, FIGMENT stretches the boundaries of creativity and community. Visitors and participants can bring a game, an experiment, a request, a challenge, a guided meditation, a performance based on audience input, a sculpture that moves or responds, a heart-stopping technological innovation that changes the way we see the world…anything that gets people working and playing and creating together.

There will be a Welcome Ceremony on Sat June 9, 11-11:30am on the Parade Grounds.

In addition to the weekend-long event, FIGMENT presents two free season-long interactive exhibitions on Governors Island in 2012: the FIGMENT Minigolf Course, and the FIGMENT Interactive Sculpture Garden, free and open for the public to enjoy while the island is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Holiday Mondays from June 9 through September 23, 2012.
