NEW YORK, NY.- FIGMENT, the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter (AIANY), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) are pleased to announce the finalists for the third annual 2012-2013 City of Dreams Pavilion Design Competition:

• Head in the Clouds by Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang
• For Rent by MTWTHFSS (Ed Blumer and Pete Storey)
• Fodder Form Pavilion by HuycKurlanDowling (Teddy Huyck, Alexis Kurland, and Conner Dowling)
• A cloud, in a Tree by SAMPLES (Julien Boitard and Richard Nguyen)

Each of the five finalists will have until September 4, 2012 to respond to jury comments and refine their designs. By September 31, 2012, the jury will reconvene to review the revised designs and select a winner. The winning team will then construct its design on Governors Island for the summer 2013 season.

THE FINALISTS:

The Enneper Pavilion by Maria Mingallon
How many toilet paper rolls are thrown away every day? How many are actually recycled? Cardboard tubes of toilet paper rolls are a great example of a product we all use daily which can be reutilized after it has served its main purpose. This pavilion is made of toilet paper cardboard tubes that form a 6-meter-spanning structure to provide shade and rain shelter for around 50 people. It aims to encourage all generations to creatively explore ways to actively recycle and bring previously used items back to life.

Head in the Clouds by Jason Klimoski and Lesley Chang
Clouds are collections of water and movement that seem to form animals, people, and cities by dreamers gazing at the sky. With their ‘heads in the clouds’ these dreamers are able to visualize all sorts of fantastic shapes, ideas, and spaces. The City of Dreams is a place dedicated to dreaming. What sort of shapes and ideas would come to light if we could walk into the clouds and experience them from the inside out? Through a series of ‘structural pillows’ made from collected water and milk bottles, this pavilion will allow visitors to enter and contemplate the light and color filtering through this ‘cloud’. What will visitors see as the light shifts through the bottles, and the wind gently blows over the form? What will they dream about, with their heads in the cloud?

For Rent by MTWTHFSS (Ed Blumer and Pete Storey)
We can significantly reduce our impact on the planet if we borrow the things we only need occasionally. The fewer things we buy, the less packaging waste we accumulate, and the smaller our carbon foot print becomes. For Rent uses 100% rented materials from the NYC area to create a pavilion that could be ordered and delivered to Governors Island — then picked up and delivered back to the distributors/vendors after the pavilion has been disassembled, creating zero waste in the process. The pavilion is suspended using a crane that allows for the space within to adapt to different uses by raising and lowering the structure. The concave canopy above is filled with foam blocks that hover over the space when it is raised for gatherings and performances, and when lowered allows kids (and adults!) to play inside.

Fodder Form Pavilion by HuycKurlanDowling (Teddy Huyck, Alexis Kurland, and Conner Dowling)
Made of tasty and biodegradable plant starches, the Fodder Form Pavilion begins as a solid form of lightweight foam blocks. Goats, ponies, or horses perform for early audiences by eating their way through the delicious blocks to create an organic, interior void in the foam. This grotto can be an escape from the sun, a band shell, or a meeting space. As the summer progresses, the elements slowly dissolve and reclaim the starch, leaving only the grassy field and a net zero-impact on the environment.

The Pavilion is a floating sail, suspended from the branches of a majestic tree, and drifting freely around its trunk like a smoky ring or cloud. Rather than a built environment, the Cloud creates a void, an empty volume, available for all activities. The Cloud has no walls, allowing uninterrupted views across the park and encouraging access from all sides. The Cloud is a translucent canopy, made from used boat sails that will undulate with the wind. At the end of the summer, the Cloud will be dismantled and sold as poncho-style raincoats. Using only recyclable and reclaimed materials, the Cloud’s environmental footprint should be close to zero, like a passing cloud. A cloud, in a tree.
