PARIS.- Versailles has always brought together the greatest creative artists. Louis XIV brought Louis Le Vau, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, Robert de Cotte, Charles Le Brun, André Le Nôtre, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Michel-Richard de Lalande, Molière, Carlo Vigarini, François Francine and Gianlorenzo Bernini, who created great works here. Subsequent rulers invited Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Jean-Marc Nattier, Jean-Henri Riesener, Richard Mique, Jacques-Ange Gabriel, Hubert Robert, André Ernest Modeste Grétry and many others. Louis Philippe, who established the Musée de l’Histoire de France (Museum of the History of France) at Versailles, made use of the most illustrious artists of his era. We owe some of the masterpieces of the Galerie des Batailles and the Salles des Croisades, to such artists as Eugène Delacroix, Horace Vernet and Louis-Ernest Meissonnier. It is in keeping with this spirit of openness to creativity that the Et ... More

Dallas Museum of Art Discovers George Romney Painting in the Collections

Work of Art Received in a 1987 Bequest Now Re at tributed to 18th-Century English Painter George Romney Based on Research by a Team of British Art Experts.

DALLAS, TX.- The Dallas Museum of Art announced today the reattribution of the painting, Young Man with a Flute, to the artist George Romney. The work of art has been in the Museum’s collections for nearly 25 years and entered it in 1987 as part of a bequest of Mrs. Sheridan Thompson. At the time of the painting’s acquisition, the artist was unknown but the painting was thought to be by the American colonial era portrait painter Ralph Earl. Then in 2000 on a visit to the Museum, British art dealer Phillip Mould suggested that the painting might be the oeuvre of English painter George Romney (1734–1802) but was not able to provide further evidence to the DMA. Ten years later, and soon after his arrival at the DMA from the Louvre, Olivier Meslay, Senior Curator of European and American Art and The Barbara Thomas Lemmon Curator of European Art, viewed the painting in the art storage area, learned of Mould&# ...   Drawings and a New Sculpture by Rachel Whiteread at Gagosian in London

LONDON.- Gagosian Gallery presents drawings and a new sculpture by Rachel Whiteread. This is the latest in a new series of sculptures for outdoor spaces in which Whiteread has substituted robust materials such as stone and concrete for the more fragile plaster, rubber, and resin of many of her best-known works. It comprises five approximately cubic forms of varying size and surface texture, arranged in a straight line. Small linear cutouts disrupt the otherwise smooth surface of each cube. Given that the work is intended for an outdoor space, changing light and shadow becomes another implicit and highly subjective dimension in the work. Two such commissions have been completed to date – in Stockholm, Sweden, and Dallas, Texas – and in subsequent works Whiteread is continuing to develop and refine her forms and use of media. Using various materials to articulate the negative space surrounding or contained by objects, ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- On Line: Drawing Through the Twentieth Century, on view at MoMA from November 21, 2010, through February 7, 2011, will explore the radical transformation of the medium of drawing throughout the last century, a period when numerous artists critically examined the traditional concepts of drawing and expanded the medium's definition in relation to gesture and form. The exhibition will bring together approximately 300 works that connect drawing to selections of painting, sculpture, photography, film, and dance (represented by films and documentation). Making the case for a discursive history of mark making, On Line maps an alternative project of drawing, with works by a wide range of artists, both familiar and relatively unknown, from different eras of the past century and from many nations. The exhibition is organized by Connie Butler, The Robert Lehman Foundation Chief Curator of Drawings, The Museum of Modern Art, and ... More

Study Reveals that Elite of Yaxchilan Produced Exclusive Handcrafts

MEXICO CITY.- Analyses conducted to objects made out of mollusk shells found at the Little Acropolis of Yaxchilan, in Chiapas, reveal the possibility of specialized handcraft workshops at the interior of Maya palaces. Apparently, members of the elite created the crafts and not members of the lower classes or foreigners as it was the custom. Researchers Adrian Velazquez Castro, Belem Zuñiga Arellano and Norma Valentin Maldonado, from the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) conduct the study of a 76-elements collection of mollusk-shell objects recovered by archaeologist Daniel Juarez at the palace area of Yaxchilan. According to Doctor Adrian Velazquez, who works at Templo Mayor Museum, the aim of the work is to contribute, based on the study of shell material, to help defining activities developed at the ... LONDON.- Following the successful show in 2008 of new sculpture, Marlborough Fine Art presents an exhibition of new paintings by Allen Jones one of Britain’s most distinguished artists. The Theatre, and its relationship to painting, fascinates Allen Jones. “Space in the theatre is activated by actors, in painting it is activated by the viewer” this opening statement in a text by the artist published in the exhibition catalogue is informed by some 50 years of theatre going; from attending performances of Stravinsky conducted by Stravinsky and the first staging of Under Milkwood to witnessing Mohammed Ali regaining his title at Madison Square Garden. “Like the depth of field in a camera, there is a zone of engagement particular to every painting that will vary according to the size of the picture and the eyesight of the viewer. LONDON.- In 2011, The Royal Academy of Arts will be presenting the first exhibition for 30 years to examine British sculpture of the twentieth century. The show will represent a unique view of the development of British sculpture, exploring what we mean by the terms British and sculpture by bringing the two together in a chronological series of strongly themed galleries, each making its own visual argument. The exhibition will take a fresh approach, replacing the traditional survey with a provocative set of juxtapositions that will challenge the viewer to make new connections and break the mould of old conceptions. Key British works include: Alfred Gilbert Queen Victoria, Phillip King Genghis Khan, Jacob Epstein Adam, Barbara Hepworth Single Form, Leon Underwood Totem to the Artist, Henry Moore Festival Figure, Anthony Caro ... NEW YORK, NY.- David Zwirner presents an exhibition of new paintings by American artist Suzan Frecon. On view at the gallery’s 525 West 19th Street space, this is the first solo exhibition by the artist since she joined the gallery in 2008. For the past four decades, Frecon has become known for abstract oil paintings and watercolors that are at once reductive and expressive. Composed with subtle, interacting arrangements of color, which the artist applies with meticulous attention to the physical qualities of paint, they appear to blur the distinction between matter and transcendence. Color assumes a physical property and almost appears material; as the artist has stated, “The reality and the spiritual of my paintings are the same.” The exhibition brings together recent paintings that revolve around the activity of painting itself ... Group Exhibition Featuring Works on Paper at Timothy Taylor Gallery
LONDON.- Timothy Taylor Gallery presents In Dreams, a group exhibition featuring works on paper by established and emerging artists, including Armen Eloyan, Volker Hueller, Tomasz Kowalski, Norbert Schwontkowski, Kiki Smith and Rose Wylie. This selection of figurative works reveals idiosyncratic narratives and their maker’s desire to construct hermetic alternative worlds. In ways similar to the logic experienced when dreaming, these drawn fictions give rise to impossible or incongruous episodes that nevertheless appear convincing when considered within their given context. Taking inspiration from myths and literature and linking spirit, animal and human worlds, Kiki Smith’s somnambulist characters and symbolic objects appear to float freely in an ambiguous ethereal space. Smith’s large-scale collage and ink works on paper reveal a deeply personal language of coded imagery, which speaks of the fragilit ... More

Tony Blair Book Party at Tate Modern Postponed Due to Demonstrators
LONDON (REUTERS).- Former British premier Tony Blair has been forced to postponed a party at the Tate Modern art gallery celebrating the launch of his autobiography because of threats from anti-war protesters, his office said on Wednesday. Demonstrators had planned to disrupt the Wednesday evening reception and a group of celebrated artists including Tracey Emin and Vivienne Westwood had called on the gallery to cancel the "disgraceful" event. Blair has also been forced to cancel a signing session for "A Journey" at a bookstore in central London. "It has been postponed for the same reason as the book signing," a spokesman for Blair said. "We don't want to put our guests through the unpleasant consequences of the actions of demonstrators." At the weekend, protestors hurled eggs and shoes at the former prime minister during a promotional event in Dublin. Blair, prime minister for Labour between 1997 and 2007, led Britain into wars ... Grand Rapids Awaits ArtPrize Crowds, Back for a Second Year
GRAND RAPIDS (AP).- ArtPrize, the Grand Rapids art show and competition that surprised locals by drawing tens of thousands of visitors when it debuted in 2009, is back for a second year. Last year, more than 37,000 people voted on their ArtPrize favorites either online or by text message.
