HELSINKI (AP).- The Helsinki City Council has narrowly rejected a proposal to build a Guggenheim art museum in the Finnish capital.
The council's board voted 8-7 against the project on Wednesday after a yearlong feasibility study commissioned by the mayor of Helsinki at a cost of $2.5 million (€1.9 million).
Culture Minister Paavo Arhinmaki expressed his satisfaction, saying the $180 million museum project was too expensive and "is now buried."
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation proposed building a museum in the Finnish capital in January.
The organization has several museums worldwide, including in Germany, Italy, Spain and one under construction in Abu Dhabi.
